  1. IF YOUR GAME WON'T RUN....

  4. The first thing to try is to use Hardball 4's virtual memory option.
  5. From the Hardball 4 demo directory, type VM <ENTER>.  Then try the
  6. demo again.  This will resolve most memory problems with the game.
  7. If this doesn't help, try the following...
  8.  
  9. Most problems are caused by your system's memory configuration.  Try a 
  10. different start up for your computer called Booting Clean.  Booting this 
  11. way often corrects freezing, most error messages, and erratic game play.  
  12. This procedure is temporary and does not change your computer.
  13.  
  14. You boot clean differently with DOS 5.0 and DOS 6.xx.
  15.  
  16. BOOTING CLEAN WITH DOS 5.0
  17. First create a Clean Boot diskette.  Please note the following steps can 
  18. only be done in drive A.  Here's how you make this disk:
  19.  
  20.   1  Insert the diskette in drive A:.
  21.  
  22.   2  At the C:> prompt, type cd\DOS and press <Enter>.
  23.  
  24.   3  Type FORMAT A:/S <Enter>.
  25.  
  26.   4  When the format is done change to the A: drive.  Type A: <Enter>.
  27.  
  28.   5  At the A:> prompt, type COPY CON CONFIG.SYS <Enter>.
  29.  
  30.   6  The cursor moves down a line.  Type DOS=HIGH,UMB <Enter>.
  31.  
  32.   7  Type DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS <Enter>.
  33.  
  34.   8  Press the control <Ctrl> and Z keys at the same time.  Then press 
  35.      <Enter>.  A message appears that says "One File Copied."
  36.  
  37.   9  Now type COPY CON AUTOEXEC.BAT <Enter>.
  38.  
  39.  10  Type PROMPT $P$G <Enter>.
  40.  
  41.  11  Press the control <Ctrl> and Z keys at the same time.  Then press 
  42.      <Enter>.  
  43.  
  44.  12  You have created the Clean Boot diskette.  Keep the disk in drive A:  
  45.      and restart your computer.
  46.  
  47.  13  At the A: prompt type C: <Enter>.  Now, change to the directory
  48.      you installed the demo to and play HARDBALL 4!

  51. BOOTING CLEAN WITH DOS 6.xx
  52. Boot Clean directly from the keyboard.  Here's how:
  53.  
  54.   1  Restart your computer.
  55.     
  56.   2  When you see the message "STARTING MS-DOS" press your F8 key.
  57.  
  58.   3  MS-DOS asks you to confirm each config.sys command.  You give yes or 
  59.      no responses to each command line.
  60.  
  61.   4  Say yes to only the following lines:
  62.        DOS=HIGH, UMB
  63.        DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
  64.  
  65.   5  At the C:> prompt change to the directory you installed the demo
  66.      to and play HARDBALL 4!
  67.  
  68. Note:  If you have a third party memory manager like 386MAX or QEMM you 
  69. should say yes to the equivelent command lines.  However you may have 
  70. problems using these managers.
